My reliably “conservative” Wall Street Journal news publication has gone woke. This is especially true when it comes to normal stories. They have a new cadre of younger writers that don’t understand how to do an objective news article.
On the front page today is the headline “Migrant Influx Brings Economic Growth”, as if the invasion on our southern border is a net positive to America.
The article cites government agency statistics on the growth of the labor force and the assumption that they will pay more in tax as a massive net benefit to economic growth in America.
I would like to correct everyone, they aren’t “migrants”. They are illegal aliens and we ought to reference them as such.
As anyone who understands rigorous economic analysis knows, this is a half-assed way to look at the situation. There is no concept of opportunity costs in the calculation.
One great tidbit that ought to comfort people working for hourly wages is that the CBO says that illegal aliens will only have a modest drag on wages, 1.7%. Isn’t that great? Inflation is running hot at 3.1% and you get a decrease in wages due to the influx of illegal labor. Wonderful. Just like we drew it up on the chalkboard.
Hey, at least our homes will get cleaned for less right?
The article, and anyone who is analyzing the situation is not figuring in the costs the entire federal, state, and local government apparatus spends to house the illegals. Not to mention that it’s illegal to hire them and pay them so how is the CBO coming up with their figures?
The other point that every left-wing economist uses as a positive when it is a negative is government spending. The lefties see it as additive to GDP and growth. The reality is it is net zero, or somewhat negative if you account for it correctly.
There is a solution. Secure the border. Then, send every single illegal back. Planeloads of people ought to be leaving the US and touching down in countries far and wide. If there are any political people that are seeking asylum, and that is a super-minority, send them to the local US embassy in the country they came from.
Yup, it will cost money to send them back. But it is far less than housing them here.
I don’t understand why the Republicans in name only don’t understand this and don’t know how to get it through their thick skulls. They are truly stupid people.
I saw that same WSJ headline and thought the exact same thing. If the "migrants" provide so much economic "growth", then why are the mayors and governors of every sanctuary jurisdiction begging for federal funding? They should tax the "growth" to pay for the "migrant" services. Easy peasy.
I hate intellectual inconsistent and I hate hypocrisy. That article/headline killed both birds with one stone.
I have an idea, let's all break windows all over the place. Property owners then will have to replace them, resulting in massive economic growth. /sarc.
