My wife had a milestone birthday and wanted to go hiking in Utah. I don’t really hike a lot, bad IT bands. In physical therapy for that right now which is helping a bit. But, there is fly fishing here, so we are fly fishing too.
We are newbies to fly fishing. Every time I have tried it, I like it. I have all my own equipment; waders, boots, pole, reel, flies, vest, and net. I don’t really know what I am doing so today with a guide and tomorrow with an old trading friend. My fingers aren’t exactly dexterous so I have trouble tying knots. I have only fly-fished in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota so I am pretty pumped up for today.
There is a crispness to the fall air and the leaves are on fire here. I took this photo yesterday afternoon. I had forgotten the various species of trees in the Uinta Mountains. I spent third grade in Salt Lake while my father earned his Ph.D.
I will miss the Alabama-Tennessee game and all the other sports on television along with the noise of life. I hope the Tribe can pull another one out. I am pulling for them since they have weathered similar misery as the Cubs. We will be on a river, hopefully pulling in some nice trout. Of course, it’s all catch and release.
Interestingly, the owner of the fly shop told me his father earned his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Chicago! His professor for his thesis was Milton Friedman. His father went on to run the Econ department at BYU. I wonder if his father knew the great Chicago English professor Norman Maclean. The owner of the fly shop said he spent his entire life trying to disprove the concept of TANSTAAFL to his father but to this day has never done it.
“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.”
― Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It and Other Stories
> the leaves are on fire here
Nice metaphor
Well, I hope you had a great time fishing (I love fishing as much as sex but not fly fishing, too much work for little reward) because you missed one of the greatest college football games of all time. Not
to mention we got to watch Nick Saban lose his shit several times during the game. Fun stuff.
