My wife and I flew from Vegas to Santa Rosa. My brother-in-law has a boatload of olive trees and we harvested olives.
We get together to have fun, and to remember their father. He fought in Korea, and olives get ripe around Veterans Day. He was an officer in the Army. Bloody Bay Ridge was on battle he was in. I think his unit was first to the fight.
Like most vets, he never spoke about it. One time I was at a bar with a friend of mine and his father. My friend’s father asked my father-in-law if he was in Korea. He said, “Yes, infantry.” My friend’s father had been in the USAF. He said, “Oooh. We used to drop you guys off. Glad I didn’t have to stay.”
Nothing more was said.
Here the olives are on the tree. It was a beautiful fall day.
My brother-in-law’s grandson helps out too!
We think we harvested around half a ton. He takes them to a press and he will get oil back around Thanksgiving.
Hope you had a good Veterans Day and bought a Vet a beer, or the drink of their choice.
CA has a lot of wonderful areas, perfect weather now. Those are some awesome bins of olives, thanks for sharing! I have a sole olive tree at my place. Messy, but I won't ever get ride of it :)
Blessed Veteran's Day wishes to you and your family.
835 lbs of olives. Unfortunately, while the harvest was big the olive sizes were small.....so the crush won't yield a tremendous river of oil.
