I am with you, Jeff! Nothing has shocked me more than the lack of outrage amongst many of the people I know over the October 7 massacre of 1200+ Israelis and the continuing attacks on Jews by those supporting the “Palestinian Cause”. No minority (there are only 16M Jews on the planet today) has suffered the level of abuse and bullying that Jews have throughout history. And yet, they don’t start wars. They don’t proselytize and try to convert everyone or imprison or kill those who don’t believe. They don’t waste time seeking revenge. They lead by example. And that example is good. We have a lot to learn from Jews - and Israel. It’s time to unite behind Jews and give the bully a big punch in the nose

Took the opportunity to visit Dachau while I was stationed there in the late 80s - it changes you. So does looking at your counterpart on the other side of the fence who is guarding a minefield - on his side of the fence.

There is nobody who believes in and tries to adhere to Judeo Christian values more than me, but, and this isn't arguing with anyone here, we need to stomp down this division both ways as Christians are being persecuted and killed far more.

Frankly, I am more shocked at how our religious leaders are NOT actually promoting all traditional Judeo Christian faiths which is a core problem. They have compromised their duty for money.

Jeffrey Carter's avatar

Agree that Christians are also being murdered. Both are equally as bad. We Christians don't have as long of a history. Surely, the old Revolutionary saying is if we don't hang together we will surely hang separately....so it makes sense to fight persecution of both.

Mitch Weiner's avatar

Ironically, or perhaps not, because we empathize, as having been persecuted and having personally lost 2/3 of my paternal side of the family in the Holocaust, I and my Jewish friends have posted a minimum of 50 times more stories about the slaughter of Christians by Islamic jihadis in Africa than all friends of other faiths combined and it blows my mind. The Press coverage is sorely lacking. We've been working on that and it's starting to make some of the mainstream outlets rather than just conservative sources or Christian sites, but it's a battle and I just don't understand that and it is sad.

One of my prayer group friends works for a wonderful organization, Frontlines International, that distributes Bibles (printed, digital etc) in many closed parts of the world. Their weekly prayer letter highlights persecution of Christians. I find it very helpful in daily prayers.

Totally appreciate your efforts! At the end of the day we have to understand the forces that are forcing us to clash and not adhere to basic humanity.

The left has done away with right and wrong, legal and illegal, and looks at every conflict as “ oppressed vs oppressor”.

While us Jews have been occupied, enslaved, tormented and discriminated against, no one considers us oppressed; we have withstood all the onslaughts and in spite of are minuscule numbers, are a powerful, successful, and thriving minority.

So when the Israeli - Iran ( let’s face it it’s all Iran ) conflict is making headlines, the left, their electorate, propagandist and pundits all side with the Muslim/palestinian factions.

Forget about who is right, who is a terrorist, who is defending, who is attacking, the Israelis/jews are powerful and rich and successful, and those poor Arabs live in poverty and are starving- that’s the narrative- and so the left hates the Jews and sides with the Arabs.

It has spilled over to the U.S., and has become a larger issue since 10-07, but even before it was on the rise here. It’s racism - Jews are rich and powerful- so we must be oppressors now.

We need to get back to teaching the masses that working hard, being disciplined and treating people properly is how most people get rich and powerful, and stop this lunacy that anyone who is successful has exploited and oppressed others-

The Musings of the Big Red Car's avatar

Your observation as to the "oppressed v the oppressor" is brilliant. That is exactly what is going on.

That and a total lack of history education as to the history of the Jews by young Americans.

Mitch Weiner's avatar

Thank you

Nunya's avatar

If the left only sees oppressed or oppressor the right only sees order or chaos. The extremes on either side leave no room for nuance.

The nuance for example that a person can be angry about the actions of Isreal without being antisemetic.

At the end of the comment is the suggestion that hard work, discipline, and manners are the path to power and riches. This is exactly what the rich and powerful want you to think so when you work hard, have discipline and manner and DONT get rich they can give you a bogeyman to blame...like immigrants, or minorities on welfare.

JD needs to put a curse on it and so far he has failed to rise to the occasion appropriately. I had high very hopes and expectations for him. There is still time, and time will tell if he has the courage to man up and face down the demon.

Hey Jeff: You've been out front on this subject when others have stayed silent; particularly after October 7th. As your friend of 30+ years, it's easy to explain why you are well respected as a trader, investor, businessman, critical thinker, and writer; and why Leo took an interest in you: it's because you're a mentsch. Now, I just need to get you to Israel for a visit. Come spend a couple of days with me in my office in Tel Aviv, and I guarantee you'll want to get back into the VC business again (it definitely beats politics, which is the place where unicorns go to die)

Anyone who has not, should visit Israel. It is an amazing country, amazing land. The history there is astonishing. You know it's there going into it, but when you are walking those streets, entering those cities/towns, it truly affects you. Two things:

1) There is no city in the world like Jerusalem. There are more beautiful cities, more stunning views, etc. But there is a level of biblical history that permeates every inch of the Old City and surrounding hills and valleys that hits you. You understand how people throughout history used to consider Jerusalem the center of the world.

But it's the people of Israel that stood out to me. There is a zest for life in these people. A literal inner light of life that you can see in them and sense as you walk the streets of Tel Aviv. The energy, the business, the history, the food! (amazing). What they have created out of the desert while ducking missiles and bombs and attacks for decades in a country the size of New Jersey, is astonishing.

If you visit, it will stay with you.

Jeffrey Carter's avatar

HA. Last night I was talking to a guy who grew up in Skokie. He told me five times I had to visit Israel. I agree with @DavidSilverman and @newmanian; I do need to visit Israel. I have always wanted to go. Maybe after this election is over......

Hi, Jeff, I am absolutely with you on batting down, intellectually and emotionally speaking, the scourge of anti-Semitism. I admire the Jewish people so much, and I had many Jewish friends and acquaintances on the CBOT floor.

As a devout Christian, we have to admire the race that gave us Jesus Christ. The Jewish people give so much to every culture in which they are fully allowed to participate. I read somewhere the old aphorism that every country which denigrates and eventually expels their Jewish citizens, er, subjects, has failed and others today putting into effect this heinous practice will soon be doomed to failure.

The media and the far left practice of victimhood stretching to Hamas and other Islamic radicals who seek to conquer and subjugate everyone else are truly a cancer on a free society. This incredible mind spin includes, of course, denigrating all of the wonderful advances of our Judeo-Christian civilization and is truly evil.

The Jewish people are a blessing to all of us! Best wishes, and Happy Hannukah and Merry Christmas to all of you!

Jeffrey Carter's avatar

thanks, and while the CBOT was the "Irish Exchange", there were plenty of Jews there and plenty of Irish at the CME! The chairman is Terry Duffy and he is a south side Irishman for goodness sake!

We are a Jewish family living in Sydney. The Labour Party here has directly enabled the anti-Semitic behavior that led to the tragic events in Bondi.

Every weekend in the Sydney CBD there are pro Palestine marches. They can say and do whatever they want. We’ve had neo Nazi groups come into the area to cause trouble. There was a caravan full of explosives found not too far from my home.

Meanwhile, we need to keep a spare set of clothes in our car in case we take our kid somewhere after school. Too risky for him to walk around in his school uniform.

We’ve had to deal with bomb threats at the school. There was an incident with social media that involved my kid. The police had to get involved and we decided to ban the use of our child’s image from promotional materials for the school. I never heard anything about what happened in the social media case, I assume the person was let off with no punishment.

Yet, despite all of that, it floors me that in the recent national election some of the parents in my kid’s class voted Labour.

In the aftermath of Bondi, I’ve read that Labour members are being loudly booed when they show up to memorial services. The closed border “cranks” are now getting the applause.

It will be interesting to see if we are on the verge of a great awakening and Jews start to align with political movements that don’t openly want them hunted and killed.

Thanks for the comment, the insight. I cannot imagine what you have to go through. I hope your last sentence is 1000% correct.

As a huge WWII history buff who has been to the WWII Museum and my wife and children share the same enthusiasm about WWII. We took a trip that followed the Band of Brothers path through Europe that included a stop at Dachau and I am appalled by not just the antisemitism but the defense by the left of the pro Palestinian cabal. WWII vets are rolling in their graves over the utter stupidity of the left.

As a Jew, I appreciate the sentiment of your post. I have long been used to antisemitic remarks from people who didn't know I am Jewish. Since you spend your summers in Minnesota, I'll give an example from the time I lived near the Twin Cities decades ago. I'm sure you've heard of the affluent suburb of Minneapolis called St. Louis Park. A Minnesota native referred to it as St. Jewish Park in my presence, and my understanding is that this was a common slur. Almost as soon as the words escaped his mouth, this Minnesotan realized that he might be in the presence of one or two of 'them' (it was two), and he apologized. The other 'Member of the Tribe' and I just exchanged knowing smiles. The thing is, however, that I don't recall being particularly threatened or hurt by this or similar remarks. Being from a very secular family, I only attended religious classes at a local synagogue for a brief period, but I did attend my share of bar mitzvahs (bat mitzvahs weren't a thing back then) at this and other synagogues, and I don't recall any special security arrangements at any of the synagogues where I attended classes or bar mitzvahs as a kid. The difference between the experience of my youth and now is not the remarks, but the need for security arrangements at synagogues or other places where Jews congregate, as you note in your piece. The need for security arrangements long predates the October 7th attack on Israel and its aftermath. Here in northern Nevada, the local Jewish community holds an annual 'Milk and Honey Festival' in the fall at an outdoor venue that is also used by other groups in the community, such as the Basques. As far as I've noticed, the Jewish event is the only one where there is a police presence on hand just in case. I'd be satisfied returning to a situation where the only thing American Jews had to deal with is hateful remarks, but at least their safety and security isn't under threat. But frankly I'm skeptical that we can get there from here at this point, and I have no idea where to even begin.

Jeffrey Carter's avatar

Yes, the fact there has to be police presence quietly underscores what we are talking about. Some standup comic will turn it into a satirical joke; but the underlying fact remains.....and the implications of it are sad.

Being almost anit-name the race/ethnic group just is beyond the pale of for me. Anit-semitism is one of many things that continue to shock me and shocks me all the more from some of the people it comes from. I seriously have to wonder if they had a horrible fall and hit their heads because otherwise some of the stupidity they spew is grounds for being institutionalized as far as I am concerned. Well, deported at the very least. I have no time for folks who dislike a group of people based on their ethnic origins, their skin color, their average height or the fact that they root for the Dallas Cowboys , Las Vegas Raiders or the Boston Red Sox openly.

America needs to confront anti-Semitism in its most basic and simplest forms as the hatred it is. It is a matter of education and lancing the fetid boil of unfounded hatred.

Anti-Semitism is hostility/hatred toward, prejudice against, and discrimination against Jews as an ethnic, racial, and religious group. It is not difficult to define or recognize.

Anti-Semitism is based on nonsensical distinctions such as:

1. Religious stereotypes that cast Jews as enemies of Christ and, by extension, Christians;

2. Ancient stereotypes of Jews as economically exploitative;

3. Characterization of Jews as tribal and socially exclusive against non-Jews;

4. An alien race threatening racial purity of favored races;

5. An usurper of lands owned by other tribes; and

6. A convenient scapegoat in times of crisis.

Much of Jew hatred is envy for the accomplishments of a small number of hardworking, industrious families who want only to be left alone with their culture, their religion, and their families.

Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the US because of fundamental education shortcomings amongst the Gen Z and Milleniels. They're not aware of history.

This is a matter of discipline, disciplining the narraive and teaching the truth.

Mitch Weiner's avatar

Thank you, for the Hanson article and for your support.

I have been encouraging people for years now to admit the truth to themselves, that the 10 to 20% of the Muslim population of the world who advocate jihad and take their book the Quran literally, which orders them to kill all infidels or non-believers, and insist upon the establishment of a worldwide Islamic caliphate ruled by Sharia law in which all non-muslims are to be taxed, and slaved and or murdered, present as a threat to the survival of the Free World and not only Jewish people, also all christians, hindus, atheist, agnostics, Buddhists and all non-muslims. Truthfully I doubt if I were a Muslim I would be calling out the radical elements of my faith for fear of my life being at risk.

The two most important things to address the growing threat of terrorism and anti-semitism is number one, crackdowns on immigration policies that allow barbarians from reckless chaos strewn hotbeds of terrorism with consanguinuity rates surpassing 40%, any of those marriages between first cousins, that have resulted in higher rates of birth defects, mental retardation and lower iqs, as proven in multiple peer eviewed studies. The average mind in western civilization erroneously believes people leave Nations like that for safety and the opportunity for a better life, when the reality is their own religious leaders and political leaders demand that they spread their religion by going to Nations where they will be a minority and can turn into a majority and anyone who doubts that simply needs to listen to their political leaders or religious leaders as that is not islamophobia it is simple fact.

Second and most important of all for the intermediate and long-term, is an absolute requirement before sitting down to discuss peace or give any aid whatsoever is that the teaching of hatred and murder of all non-believers to elementary school age onward children in the madrasas and the UNRWA sponsored schools (yes, we have reams of evidence of that sponsored by the United Nations disgustingly) MUST BE HALTED. It breeds generations of terrorists. Ignoring that is simply letting the boy with the matches continue to run in front of you while you're putting out the brush fires and he is starting new ones.

Additionally, it is absurd that Holocaust Education is not mandatory Nationwide throughout the Free World, not because I'm Jewish but because it illustrates the capacity which is unlimited for man's inhumanity to man to take place when the masses are asses and decency has been compromised.

It was the first systematic scalable attempt to eradicate one specific segment of people. The Nazi's learned from Turkey's persecution of the Armenians. The difference is the Turks weren't as systematic, never kept written records, and were NEVER held accountable

Your story here is great. I too had a very similar path in discovering what the Jewish faith is all about. From my kids growing up in Northbrook attending school and playing travel sports with many Jewish kids, and my 4 kids going to hundreds of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, lifelong friendships have developed for them and for myself.

I also developed many of those same friendships from the trading floor like you did Jeff. What is happening in our world and especially in our country is appalling to me! These are decent people who have no desire but to live good and peaceful lives, raise families and enjoy the "American Dream". The hateful and negative speech must end!

That being said, I want to wish everyone a joyous and peace filled holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year! Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to all!

Jeffrey Carter's avatar

Yes, in the northern suburbs and southern suburbs, there was more religious diversity than there was in the western suburbs where I grew up. On the floor we used to joke; and in general no one crossed a line. laughing about the stereotypes was cathartic. Not sure if people have been exposed to Ole and Lena jokes...or the jokes between Swedes and Norwegians...but they are out there. I can remember arguing about who had the market cornered on guilt, Jews or Catholics....was pretty funny how similar the origins of guilt were between religions.
