The Treasurer Is Nevada's CFO-Here Is What That Actually Means

We demand that the attorney general have a law degree. Shouldn’t the Nevada State Treasurer have demonstrable and verifiable financial experience?

Most people do not know what a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) does. As a matter of fact, most people think it’s a certified public accounting (CPA) type role.

CPA’s are tax experts. CFO’s are forward-looking strategists. There is a huge chasm and difference between them. CPAs focus on historical information and provide snapshots of your financial situation through financial statements and tax returns. A CFO takes your historical financial information along with industry statistics and best practices to help plan your future by showing you where and when to take action.

Of course, the Nevada State Legislature defines the Treasurer’s job as the “Chief Investment Officer” of the state, among other things. Being a treasurer aligns closely with being a CFO. That’s why every sitting Republican Nevada state legislator who is endorsing in races endorsed me over my opponent. They know the job, and they know the stakes.

How would the two different perspectives view a .50 cut in interest rates by the Fed?

The CPA would tell you about it a few months after it happens. You’d miss the move and lose money. Our current treasurer missed the downward move in interest rates, costing us millions. Their own report said they were late to the party in repositioning the portfolio. Watchdogs would report on it after it happened, while CFO’s would have prevented it.

The CFO would have anticipated the move. The CFO would have analyzed what was going to happen and determined various probabilities of that event happening. Once they understood that, they’d engage in a course of action to best insulate the state of Nevada from a move downward in interest rates, saving the state from losing millions and millions of dollars. I am the only one in this race from either party who strategizes like a CFO.

On a $12 billion portfolio, that’s tens of millions. Not chump change.

A CPA is colloquially and affectionately known as a “bean counter”.

A CFO takes a bean, plants it in the soil, helps it grow, and makes more beans.

In the Republican primary for the Nevada State Treasurer’s race, voters have a stark choice. You can vote for someone who wants to fake it till they make it, or me.

• Has an FEC complaint hanging over $422,000 in campaign finances and wants to manage your $12 billion. He also left his think tank bankrupt.
