I always tell people that when they retire, live someplace that they consider to be beautiful. It could be a lake in Minnesota, a condo in Manhattan, on a river in Montana, or in a beach town in North Carolina.
The beauty of places seeps into our souls and improves our lives when we spend a lot of time in such places.
Love the pics! How far of a drive is the cabin from Chicago? BTW, did you hear the good news? Govenor PORK CHOP is running for a third term. He just added 2 Billion to the next state budget and created a bunch of NEW taxes to balance that budget!!
9-10 hours depending on how fast you drive and how many stops you make, and traffic in Chicago/Wisconsin up to Eau Claire. Quickest I have ever made it was 8 hours and 45 minutes....
We have a similar pilgrimage to our place on one of the tidal rivers in VA--nearly 5 miles wide, sand beach, ospreys, eagles, the garden (work but oh my something about smelling the lillies and roses sends me to a different spot).
One's blood pressure recalibrates and adjusts to rural life. Enjoy!
Started unintentionally by my Grandfather I think....it evolved, and then we all realized how much he truly loved being in the woods. His writing, the paintings he painted, his tools etc all still here. My uncles/father also left their marks (as did everyone in my family in some way). Now I am just the manager until the next generation decides if they want it or not. My daughter was married here during Covid.
Thank you for your upbeat story about your place in Minnesota. I'm sure it's great to continue to go back over all these years. I like you comment below about swatting mosquitoes. That's one thing I don't miss about the midwest.

The smoked fish at Kendall's is just an excuse. You really go there because of the Royal Bohemian Beer!
Jeffery hope you and the family have a great summer, and keep your readers posted. on your exercise routine clear cutting the lot next door. 🪓🌲🪚
I don't know if I will get more exercise clearing or swatting mosquitoes.
Beautiful photos and enjoy the summer. I grew up in Minnesota and spent every summer at our family cabin just south of Detroit Lakes, still miss it.
Have a fun and safe summer in Gods country.

Yupppp....there is a lot of "work" here.
Cheers from our lake place in Center City, MN!
Great write up. Welcome back.
There is nothing like the lakes off the Gunflint Trail. (And bringing coffee up from Dunn Bros. in Duluth, also sundries from the Smokehaus there.)
Fantastic family tradition. Bravo and well played.
