Calling the new Chynese “AI” product “DeepRake” vs “DeepSeek” may be the best Spoonerism yet, as it certainly seems, at second glance, a voluntary spyware system.
The “spread” trades off of this bubble (can we say that yet?) are quite the example of “Overdone”. [The “reports” this AM from GS & JPM on DeepSeek and future chip spend sure seem defensive of the original bet on “AI”.]
Bitcoin/crypto started out as an alternative currency that avoided the government and big financial institutions. That had a lot of appeal, and still does, especially in our current world. Over time, crypto has become more like a commodity, something to invest and speculate in. And it's becoming a little more regulated and big banks are beginning to shape its use and market. Just like the currency that it was not supposed to be. It seems to becoming more like crude oil than a currency. With quantum computing things will come full circle, and ever more elaborate safes will be required to protect against thieves. Just like gold, except with crypto there's nothing really there, except the value we place on it, and if it's easy to steal and hard to protect the value will be quite low.
Agree with Melinda. DeepRake is great. tm it. It's been mentioned in a few pieces that the Chinese record everything you submit to their program and also it's all subject to being looked at by the Chinese Military.
Some time ago the person who does xkcd wrote about passwords. His thesis (which is probably correct) that long passwords with jumbled up meanings that you can easily memorize are better than shorter ones with a lot of symbols, numbers, etc.
Quantum computing may throw all of that into a cocked hat. Still when you look at how most passwords are stolen it's either hacking into a network because the people running it didn't upload patches (I'll get around to it tomorrow) or social phishing. (I forgot my password can and I really need it, can you help me...) ie. human gullibility and error. Again Quantum computing may make that moot. Solution? Maybe we should all get QR tattoos. But these can probably be faked. My guess is it will be a race that will never end.
As long as there are big $$ rewards for hacking/stealing etc there will be people seeking to do so.
There is a premium for safety--in RE exhibited in more expensive houses in safer neighborhoods, in nations shown in more enthusiasm for US investment vs countries with records of exfiltration or nationalizing investments, and in currency as you point out Jeff.
In a period with this much church keeping powder dry makes sense to me...but then again, I have more at risk am not young so my horizon to recoup losses is less.
Somehow I think "church" fits also. A lot of things are "beliefs". See Communism as an example. Never worked, never came close to working. The response is always "true communism has never been tried". How much AI will be "real" and a benefit, and how much is hoopla is still an open question. Everything looks good on paper.

I’m thinking maybe I should learn to code
"Crypto' is all I need to know about the idea; I don't any more mystery about my money than I already have.
I thought the same thing.

I hate the idea of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve....

Another AI spellcheck--CHURN is what I meant which was changed to "church".
Another reason why I am skeptical of how far AI will penetrate.

It will be replaced by something better in less than a year and a half and probably 6 months
