Be honest, my wife was all up in arms about it, but as much as I love her and as smart as she is, she most likely has no idea who Don Rickles is and has not seen any of the old school Roasts. She also has never heard Richard Pryor and or Eddie Murphy or Dave Chapppelle live, I have. I frankly see literally nothing wrong with anything he said. Having lived in NYC for 13 years, having a dated a girl who was half PR and half DR( Which means one side of her hated the other side), I have heard worse and frankly there is always truth in what guys like this say. Sadly, PR is just that, and has been that way for decades. DR is better, but not demonstrably and then you have Cuba. I remember playing against St. John's my last year in college, it was Felipe Lopez's first and he had just been on the cover Sport Illustrated in that curse that was the Jordan Pose. When the game started all of these folks from DR were running all over Alumni Hall in Queens singing songs like it was a soccer game and there were DR flags everywhere. I got in the game in the middle part of the first half and spent some time guarding him and talking to him on the free throw line. Nice as could be, but coming out of the Bronx, where my University was located, that is what literally looked like had taken over the entirety of the gymnasium. Guys with five beepers on their belts, girls with clothing that was six sizes too small and the like. Things are what they are, making fun of it and or trying to point it out in what was not that humorous of a way, is what it is. I can assure you, that may have offended many, but may have garnered Trump more DR votes in NYC and North Jersey.
Fair point. I actually thought the watermelon joke before that was worse....but maybe the real issue is that this was a total unforced error by the campaign. They didn't need this guy at the rally for it to be successful...and you don't need a comedian to "warm every body up"
I agree they did not need him, you are spot on. Of course, they should be able to have him, as this is pretty standard fare for political rallies over the years, but the fact that the media has come out of the Socialist/Communist closet 2 decades ago and now is on full time attack mode for the right breathing improperly, you can not afford to have a comedian, sadly, at your rally.
All of the hysteria is coming no matter what. Sure, could have played it more safe with no comedian, but then they would have focused their hysteria on something else. Oh, like filling up Madison Square Gardens is a nazi rally. Lots of nazi rallies happening throughout the year there by their own stupid logic.
I imagine the looks of chagrin on the faces of the media hit men Sunday night after having watched the whole MSG event looking for signs of Nazi evil. THIS joke (based on a true story, btw, PR is in fact overwhelmed with trash, go look it up if you don't believe me) is the best that they could do. HOW SAD FOR THEM! And... how sad for the poor TDS sufferers that they have to pretend that this is a controversy.
Jeffrey, I'm at least your age and watched Rickles a lot. I cannot remember a single time he ever "Made fun of himself." The closest was a ROAST of Rickles by other comedians. I don't know this guy---my Millennial son thinks he's very funny and apparently so do his contemporaries.
Other than the fact he seems to lack talent, uses the word "unbelievable" way too often, and just really isn't that funny, a previous comment above in the thread about Puerto Rico having a problem with producing more trash than anywhere else here is applicable but probably not commonly known.
Interesting how not many media outlets seem to have picked up the fact that the Senator from Puerto Rico has endorsed Donald Trump, after the MSG rally.. 🤣
That stated, anybody that's going to be critical of Hillary or Kamala's idiocy with regard to referring to the MSG rally as a Nazi rally should keep in mind that Bill Clinton also had a rally at Madison Square Garden. LOL
The crap with Nazis and fascism and Hitler comparisons has really got to end, because it is an insult, not just to the Jewish people everywhere, but anyone who lost family members in the Holocaust and it diminishes the significance and impact of the Holocaust.
Ironically, it feeds into the obvious problem about disagreeing with people on the left, that even when you present facts to them, it means you must be a racist or a Nazi.🤨🙄
You are right Jeff, the guy just sounds like a moron. 😄 He should not have been there, they could have selected someone else.
"Nutpicking," the tactic of drawing attention to misbehavior (in this case, speech) of a low-level individual who's nominally on the other side in order to smear the whole tribe, works best if you strip the proverbial crime of critically important context.
That context in this case is that Hinchcliffe was referencing a news item: Puerto Rico, which produces more trash per capita than the rest of the US, is going through trash crisis. Way too much trash, basically, on a densely populated and not very large island, and not enough places to put it. A Global Press Journal's piece "Trash Crisis Leaves Puerto Rico Near 'the Brink'" says experts "worry that trash will soon overwhelm the region," and describes how the runoff and puddling of slime is polluting aquifers, etc. The trash crisis has even been reported on by such notorious ultra right-wing sites as...NPR ("the problem of contaminated water and trash literally flowing into homes in her neighborhood is decades-old and getting worse..")
So, that awful, terrible, horribly racist ultra-right-wing Maga joke was just some roast-style comic (not a very funny one) in a pre-warm-up part of the rally -- the warm-up before the warm-ups - making an edgy-sounding topical reference.
Is it a big deal, or a serious own-goal? I'm not convinced that it's a good idea the long run to allow statist-media nut-pickers to mindfully apply industrial strength context removers that allow them to dictate what is and isn't funny, or what can and can't be said. Not everyone is as stupid or irrational or inflamed as their intended audience.
100%. I wish Substack would let one post pictures. The Drudge headline this morning is "THEY'RE EATING THE PUERTO RICANS!". The entire rally was sleaze and insults. Falling into the abyss loon Carlson being the most high profile example. I just want to sleep for the next 4 years. There's no good that will come next week.
I watched the routine. Not exactly earth shattering, but when you’re in a hole as big as Kamala is, you take what you can scrounge.

There are plenty of Nazis and communist rallies happening every day during election season, they are called DNC rallies.

He'd always make fun of himself with a one liner in there....it was quiet, usually a pause in the stream of insults.
Agreed. Kamala and Tim Jong offend me every day. Trump didn't script Tony. We need to get over it.
You took the bait.

People still take Drudge seriously?
Sure. Why not. The MAGAs turned against him for his anti-MAGA stance. Still plenty of interesting links and sometimes funny headlines.
I think that site has become more than just anti-MAGA, to be honest.
Agree. Way more than just anti-MAGA. Irrelevant it is.
He’s become a caricature of a left-wing activist in many ways.
Drudge is a useful idiot at this juncture.
