The USA looks like a 3rd world country. Florida addressed most of the issues after the 2000 election. The right way for mail in ballots is to require them to be returned by Election Day and start counting before Election Day. In IL the votes need to be postmarked by Election Day and received within 14 days (!) after Election Day.

Do note that while it is tempting to say the fix is in, Burke campaign manager and Ald. Ray Lopez do not believe there are any issues with the counting other than communication.

IL's procedures make room for mischief, real or imagined.

Wow! If I didn't read Jeff's blog, I'd still think Burke had won fairly decisively.

I was the Republican Committeeman of the 48th Ward from 1998-2008. (Foster to Devon, the Lakefront to Clark St). I grew up there, and until the early 1970's, Edgewater was one of Chicago's few Republican strongholds. Things have been going downhill since, so as of this morning, Harris leads Burke, 56-44. Granted, this was a Dem primary result so we can assume that the few right wingers left in the 48th pulled a GOP ballot, but even if I add those GOP ballots to Burke's total, she still would've lost the 48th.

Leaving Chicago for good was the single most satisfying decision I've ever made. Born and raised and I haven't so much as set foot in Illinois in the 16 years since I boogied on down the road.
